The locations of the Beefmaster cattle and lamb feedlots have been specially chosen with strict geographical considerations in mind. Situated near the town of Christiana in the North West Province of South Africa, our two separate feedlots – one for cattle and one for lamb – are in the heart of South Africa’s cattle country. Good overall seasonal temperatures and ample rainfall make this an ideal area to raise the top class animals we strive for. The Vaal River is also close by and this means a plentiful and regular supply of water.
Cattle and lamb are sourced throughout southern Africa. Upon arrival each animal is individually assessed to determine the optimum regimen required to bring it up to Beefmaster standards. One of the most important factors with new arrivals is to reduce stress levels as far as possible.
Upon arrival the animals are allowed to rest, and they receive healthy feed and fresh water. After this they are sorted and selected to be entered into the various components of the feedlot system. Animals which are still too young are taken to pasture to go through a maturing period. Others that are of age and size are divided into subgroups of, age, gender, weight and breed. Each of these subgroups has different requirements, and rations are specially formulated for each group.
Once the animals have been sorted and selected, every animal is inspected, weighed, immunized, and given a unique number which accompanies it through the entire system until the day it leaves. The strictest measures are followed when it comes to the handling of the animals. Our staff undergoes constant training to ensure only the best treatment of the animals.
Thousands of tons of feed are prepared each month. The feed is comprised of natural products, most of which Beefmaster produces itself. In addition to the two feedlots near Christiana Beefmaster have farms in the Eastern Free State. These farms are used for both cattle and maize production.
Beefmaster also operates a center pivot irrigation scheme adjacent to the cattle feedlot for the producing maize silage. The importance of high quality silage cannot be over-emphasized as silage makes up a very necessary portion in the feed ration for cattle.
With all of the above factors taken into consideration, Beefmaster ensures that only the very best is produced under the strictest care by well-trained and highly skilled employees.
