Zolile Caka’s journey with Beefmaster Group began 13 years ago, armed with nothing but a matric qualification and a burning ambition to succeed. Through hard work, focus, dedication, and the support of the company, Zolile climbed the ranks and currently holds the position of Data Capturer. However, his aspirations reached beyond his current role. Recognising his potential, Beefmaster Group provided Zolile with the opportunity to pursue a National Diploma in Animal Production. In honour of Youth Month this June 2023, here is his story.
May 2023: “I knew that pursuing this intellectually rigorous avenue would lead me to my dreams.”
These are the wise words of Zolile Caka, Data Capturer at Beefmaster Group in Christiana, North West, after having recently completed a National Diploma in Animal Production with Peritum Agristute, with support from Beefmaster Group.
His words – acknowledging the significance of education – hold particular relevance within the South African context. In 2022, the country faced a youth unemployment rate of 60%, largely stemming from a disconnect between students and the demands of the job market.
Raised in the Free State, surrounded by animals and farmland, Zolile developed a fervent interest in agriculture early on. This led him to pursue a National Diploma in Animal Production, fuelled by his aspiration to have a positive impact on the industry. Zolile elaborates, “I wanted to do something with animals for my future career.”
When Zolile learned about the Employee Study Assistance Program offered by Beefmaster Group, he submitted his application and received comprehensive support from the organisation, including financial support and resources. This enabled him fully immerse himself in his studies and focus on his academic and personal growth. Zolile’s dedication earned him the prestigious Best Progress Award from Peritum Agri Institute and the Red Meat Organisation (RPO) in recognition of his educational accomplishments.
Fuelled by the belief that education paves the way to success, Zolile realised how his personal growth could also contribute to the progress of the company – “Hundreds of millions of small-scale producers and pastoralists depend on livestock for their livelihoods. Farm animals play important economic, cultural, and social roles. I want to contribute my knowledge and experience to continue to make Beefmaster Group one of the best beef producers globally.”
Zolile’s education has served as a catalyst for a range of improvements in livestock management. Whether it’s enhancing feeding systems for animals or orchestrating the smooth execution of animal identification and traceability initiatives, Zolile’s learning journey has given him the ability to not only calculate profitability but also make informed decisions in his current role.
His aspirations are far-reaching. Looking forward he envisions expanding his knowledge to the point where he can expertly design and implement nutrition programs that cater to the diverse needs of animals. He aims to elevate breeding programs, fostering the development of healthier and more robust livestock populations. Simultaneously, Zolile’s sights are set on championing sustainable and profitable agricultural practices, a pursuit that aligns with modern demands for responsible resource management.
Because of his education and deep enthusiasm for his role, Zolile sees himself as a valuable resource for farmers in the Free State region. Armed with his expertise, he plans to not only educate them on optimal animal handling practices but also guide them towards more effective breeding methods. By sharing his insights, Zolile hopes to elevate the agricultural landscape, contributing to the betterment of farming practices and the livelihoods of those who depend on them.
Zolile emphasises the significance of having a clear vision, a well-structured plan, and an unwavering dedication to personal growth. He urges individuals to centre their attention on their life aspirations while sidestepping distractions that impede advancement. Zolile extends the following advice to those who seek to leverage education for realising their dreams, stating,
“Progress is only possible with hard work, passion, and commitment to excellence.”
