The South African government consistently underscores the significance of artisan training in addressing the country’s high unemployment rate. A targeted objective has been set to produce 30,000 artisans annually in South Africa by 2030. This focus on artisanal training is driven by the recognition that it holds the key to meeting the nation’s demand for scarce skills.

Cindy Nkgoeng, HR Group Manager at Beefmaster Group, one of Kimberley’s prominent private employers, highlights the pressing skills shortage faced by the agricultural sector, particularly within the beef industry. The industry requires various skills ranging from electricians and fitters and turners to specialised technical expertise in areas such as meat cutting and food processing. These remarks were made in anticipation of Workers Day, observed annually on May 1st.

In light of the prevailing youth unemployment crisis in both the country and Kimberley, Nkgoeng emphasises the company’s dedication to addressing these challenges, “Our objective is to empower the youth with essential skills that enhance their employability within the industry.” To achieve this goal, Beefmaster Group has introduced an apprenticeship program aimed at nurturing critical and scarce skills specific to the industry.

“Since we started the programme, we have successfully trained nine candidates, and most recently, three candidates completed and passed their trade test,” says Nkgoeng. “We have also absorbed one apprentice into the permanent position of an electrician at our operation in Kimberley.”

The company proactively engaged with local Further Education and Training (FET) colleges to identify and support previously disadvantaged students. These students were enrolled in a comprehensive three-year apprenticeship program, where the company provided funding for both their theoretical and practical skill development. The selection process for the program took into account the student’s academic performance, followed by interviews and assessments.

In addition to the apprenticeship program, Beefmaster Group extends financial aid to its employees who aspire to pursue formal qualifications, such as a Diploma in Animal Production. This support further demonstrates the company’s commitment to fostering educational advancement and empowering its staff members.

“Our objective is to ensure that our staff has the relevant skills to enable the company to remain competitive in the industry,” says Nkgoeng. “Understanding that investing in our human capital will yield good returns for the business, we have an employees-assistance funding scheme and programme that encourages our employees to fulfil their potential.”

These initiatives aim to target various skills and areas of expertise. The apprenticeship program focuses on developing skills in Mechanical Fitting & Turning and Electrical fields. Furthermore, the company supports the pursuit of Diplomas in Animal Production, as well as technical and maintenance skills, quality assurance, meat-cutting techniques, and food processing. The broad scope of these initiatives reflects the company’s commitment to fostering a diverse range of valuable skills within its workforce.

“We have assisted 14 employees who were studying towards their formal qualifications in the last financial year.”

Moreover, Beefmaster Group provides bursaries to university students pursuing degrees in Agricultural Economics, as well as qualifications in Animal Production, quality assurance, and technical and maintenance skills. This commitment to offering financial assistance further demonstrates the company’s dedication to supporting higher education and fostering expertise in various fields relevant to its operations.

“It is our vision that these initiatives not only contribute positively to the high youth unemployment rate in the country and Northern Cape province but also add value to companies and economies. By doing so, young people can see themselves differently, and also make a lasting contribution to society,” concludes Nkgoeng.

Beefmaster Group’s unwavering commitment to investing in the skills and expertise of Kimberley’s workforce stands as a testament to its vision for a brighter future. Through apprenticeship programs, financial assistance for formal qualifications, and bursaries for higher education, the company is actively empowering individuals and addressing the critical need for skilled professionals in various fields.

By nurturing talent and fostering growth, Beefmaster Group not only strengthens its own operations but also contributes to the development of the local community. As the company continues to prioritise investment in skills, it paves the way for a prosperous and sustainable future, both for itself and for the talented individuals who call Kimberley their home.
